Four new members are joining the cabinet led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. They will be sworn in by newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday night at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

A source from the Cabinet Division confirmed the matter on Friday (August 21).

The four new ministers are Dr. Abdul Moin Khan MP, a member of the BNP Standing Committee; Barrister Andalib Rahman Partho MP, Chairman of Jatiya Party; Saching Pru Jerry, Member of Parliament elected from Bandarban; and Mohammad Shamim Kaisar Lincoln, Member of Parliament for Gaibandha-4 constituency.

Sources from the Cabinet Division indicate that further reshuffles in the cabinet are possible. As part of this, changes are likely in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Food, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Local Government, and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Meanwhile, preparations for the new President’s swearing-in ceremony at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban have been completed. The President’s Press Secretary, Md. Sarwar Alam, stated that all arrangements for the ceremony are finalized and the Cabinet Division is managing the event.

Officials from the Cabinet Division informed that over 1,200 guests have been invited to the President’s swearing-in ceremony.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will be sworn in as President at 7:30 PM on Friday at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Acting Speaker Qaisar Kamal will administer the oath of office. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani will conduct the ceremony.

According to the invitation card for the oath ceremony, the President will enter the Durbar Hall at 7:30 PM. The ceremony will then commence with the national anthem and recitation from the Holy Quran. Subsequently, the Acting Speaker will administer the President’s oath.

Previously, on July 24, President Md. Shahabuddin, who was elected during the Awami League government’s tenure, resigned. With the presidential post becoming vacant, the process for electing a new president began within 90 days, as per constitutional provisions.

On Thursday (August 20), voting for the presidential election took place at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban from 2 PM to 5 PM. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP candidate, was contested by retired Colonel Oli Ahmad, the candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami.

Out of a total of 349 Members of Parliament, 343 valid votes were cast. Mirza Fakhrul was elected with 255 votes, while Oli Ahmad received 88 votes. After the vote count, the electoral officer and Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin announced the results. Later that night, a gazette notification regarding the presidential election results was issued.

After the reintroduction of the parliamentary system, a presidential election was held in 1991 due to candidates from both BNP and Awami League. This time, after almost 35 years, voting for the presidential election was held again because of multiple candidates.
