There is no hurry regarding the Prime Minister’s visit to India; the trip will take place at an opportune moment after ensuring national interest through discussions, stated State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir.

He made this remark on Saturday in Savar, responding to journalists’ questions after paying homage to the brave martyrs of the Great War of Liberation at the National Memorial.

Humayun Kabir said, “Bangladesh wants to maintain a positive and effective relationship with India. India is a neighboring country to Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh will not compromise its national interest in its relations with any country, including India.”

Regarding the extradition of a person named Sheikh Hasina, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs said, “A person named Sheikh Hasina is a terrorist who fled to India. Judicial proceedings against her are ongoing, and verdicts have been delivered in several cases. Several other cases are pending. There is an extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India. Therefore, this matter concerning Sheikh Hasina is not about a new decision; it is an ongoing issue between the two countries.”

He added, “Many other criminals have fled to India. It is a natural demand of the people of Bangladesh to bring them back. Communication and discussions will be held with India regarding this matter.”

Regarding the possible timing of the India visit, Humayun Kabir stated, “If a consensus based on national interest can be reached even tomorrow, then the visit could happen next week. Or it could be the week after. However, there is no hurry concerning this.”

The State Minister further added, “A Prime Minister-level visit cannot be arranged abruptly. Such visits require necessary discussions and preparations beforehand. When the heads of government of two countries meet, it is not merely a formality; it involves important discussions and adequate preparations.”
