Gas supply from US company Excelerate Energy’s terminal has been halted again. Due to the absence of an LNG cargo, the terminal’s gas reserves in Moheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, ran out on Wednesday (August 19). Consequently, only Summit’s terminal is currently supplying imported LNG. Concerned officials fear that this could further exacerbate the gas crisis nationwide.
According to Petrobangla sources, 560 million cubic feet of gas were supplied from Summit’s terminal by 8 PM on Wednesday. During this period, the total gas supply in the country was 2.18 billion cubic feet, with 1.62 billion cubic feet coming from domestic sources.
With the cessation of supply from Excelerate Energy’s terminal, the country will have to rely solely on Summit’s terminal for imported gas until new LNG cargos arrive. This could intensify pressure on gas supply to various sectors, including industry and power generation.
Previously, on Friday (August 14), Excelerate’s terminal had completely shut down due to technical issues. At that time, national grid gas supply plummeted to approximately 1.65 billion cubic feet. The situation improved slightly a few hours later when gas supply from Summit’s terminal resumed at 6:10 PM.
Initially, about 110 million cubic feet of gas were supplied from Summit that day, with supply gradually increasing later in the night.
Repeated disruptions in LNG supply and a shortage of import cargos have reignited concerns about the country’s gas situation. Officials fear that if supply from Excelerate’s terminal is not quickly restored, the impact of the gas crisis could spread further.
