Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will take oath today (Friday) at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban. He is the 23rd President of the country. The oath-taking ceremony will take place on Friday (August 21) at 7:30 PM.

Yesterday evening (Thursday), the Election Commission (EC) issued a gazette notification announcing Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the elected President. The notification states: “In accordance with Section 11 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991 (Act No. 27 of 1991), and as declared by the electoral officer and election commissioner, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is hereby declared elected to the office of the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, as per Rule 12(6) of the Presidential Election Rules, 1991.”

After 35 long years, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected as the 23rd President of the country through direct voting in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament). Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin declared Mirza Fakhrul as the winner after counting the presidential election votes around 5:20 PM on Thursday.

Among the valid ballot papers in the election, retired Colonel Oli Ahmed, the candidate from the 11-party alliance, received 88 votes. Additionally, BNP-nominated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir received 255 votes. Accordingly, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been duly elected President with the highest number of votes.

Previously, on July 24, President Md. Shahabuddin resigned citing health reasons. In accordance with constitutional provisions, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, assumed the responsibilities of the President on that very day.
