Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the candidate nominated by the BNP, has been elected as the 23rd President of the country through direct voting in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) after a hiatus of 35 years.
On Thursday (August 20), at around 5:20 PM, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin declared Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir victorious after the counting of votes for the presidential election.
Earlier on Thursday, voting for the presidential election began at 2:00 PM in the parliamentary chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament House). Among the first to cast their votes were Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikrom), Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, BNP-nominated presidential candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.
Subsequently, members of parliament from both the government and opposition parties exercised their voting rights one by one until 5:00 PM.
After the voting concluded, vote counting commenced within the parliamentary chamber. Following the count, the CEC declared Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the 23rd President of the country.
This election holds particular political significance as it marks the first competitive presidential election held in the National Parliament in over three decades.
